sentenced to ten years in jail today for a deadly road rage incident. gloria mcmillan pleaded guilty to felony hit aupd run back in august. she got in an argument with 21ials harrington, a driver of another car. harrington is from mount vern none. mcmillan hit and dragged harrington under her suv. the victim's mother said ultimately the sentence doesn't matter. >> nothing can replace my daughter, bring her back. in a way, it doesn't matter. it's just a day, five years, ten years. at the end of the day, it don't matter. >> the defendant read an apology to the family before she was sentenced. because the prosecution only charged mcmillan with felony hit-and-run, the judge could not consider the death of the victim in that case.

this week a candidate was challenged over his 20-year-old arrest on a minor marijuana charge. half a dozen candidates are seeking the council. one of the personal issues emerging in this campaign. >> how do you support -- >> reporter: michael brown is running for re-election, holding one of two at-large seats in the november 6th ballot. one challenger, a former council staff member, has been attacking brown for a series of widely reported personal and private business lapses that grasso says makes brown unfit for the council. brown fired back, mentioning in the story online saying that grasso had a drug arrest in his background, saying grasso wasn't disclosing this. in an interview with news4, grasso, a lawyer, said it's a 20-year-old minor arrest for marijuana. >> i'm not trying to hide it. i voluntarily disclosed it to

college when i applied to college, law school, and ultimately to the d.c. bar. i think this is just a way to distract away from his own problems. he had serious problems that are current and shows he's not fit to be on the council. >> reporter: michael brown said he doesn't care about the old arrest, not the ethics of better disclosing it. >> the issue is, if you're going to run on this kind of transparency, good government, ethical mantra, you need to be ethical and open with the voters. he didn't seem to do that. he didn't mentioned it in the beginning of this campaign. >> reporter: as for his own business and financial issues, brown says the voters will decide if they're relevant. in the district, tom sherwood, news4. coming up on news4, a15u89s in syria. gunmen using machine guns in the streets. but it may not be what it appears. women walking alone in virginia. there have been repeated attacks. but this time it got more violent. someone's been charged in the case of a maryland teenager who was tortured by bullies and

back now to questions about the debtly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. during the debate last night, vice president joe biden was asked why government officials initially said that attack grew out of a protest. >> i do know this, there is nobody in the administration motivated by anything other than trying to understand what happened. to this day, to this day we do not have a complete picture. we do not have all the answers. >> secretary of state hillary rodham clinton was asked today whether there was a demonstration in benghazi on the night of the attack. she indicated she wants to wait for a full accounting of the incident before she makes any direct comment. secretary clinton defended

susan rice who has come under fire for saying a protest preceded the attack. she said rice was working with the same information from the intelligence community as every other senior official. a group with links to al qaeda claims it helped take over a government missile base in syria today. the name of the group says they're going to seize large weapons. they're trying to take over the northern city of aleppo. this shows a suspected rebel firing a machine gun. it is not clear whether the shooting is all for show. people are seen calmly taking pictures of him. three suspected taliban hitmen are in custody tonight accused of trying to kill a 14-year-old girl in pakistan. malala yousafzai was shot on tuesday as she rode a school bus. she was shot for speaking up for the education of girls. nbc's amna has the latest on her

condition. >> reporter: an update today in the recovery of malala yousafzai one day after the young woman was transferred to a pediatric critical care unit in a military hospital outside the capital city. a military spokesman said today her condition is, quote, satisfactory. she does remain on a ventilator and is still unconscious, but her heart rate and blood pressure are normal. >> we are doing our best. i can assure you all the resources are being employed for her best treatment. and similarly for the best security for the family. >> reporter: meanwhile, across pakistan, people continue to show their support for malala by taking part in a national day of prayer, including special services and a moment of silence in her honor. >> we pledge that we will not allow the future of our children to be endangered by the militant mind-set. >> reporter: back in her home region, signs her attackers

could be brought to justice. police officials tell us today they've arrested three young men involved in the attack against malala as she left school on tuesday. the young men are between the ages of 17 and 22, but the mastermind behind her attack remains at large. nbc news, kabul. the european union was awarded the nobel peace prize today. the nobel committee praised the 27 nations for working for peace and democracy over the last 60 years. the union was created to rebuild europe after world war ii. it represents about 500 million people. storm team 4 meteorologist doug kammerer is live at nats park with more about the forecast for everybody going to the game tonight. and the weekend ahead. hey, doug. >> and this is how close we are. obviously to the field. a little errant throw. no worries here. they're taking batting practice out there right now. our guys are crushing the ball

right now. let's hope that carries through for the actual game which starts in just under two hours. as far as the weather's concerned, you know it's going to be on the cold side. we've been talking about it over the past 24 hours or so. temperatures right now 58 degrees at the airport. notice the wind. winds north at 16 miles an hour, gusting to almost 20, 25 miles an hour. if those winds continue throughout the rest of the evening, i do expect this to be a very, very cool night. let's look at the numbers. temperatures around the rest of the area, still in the 50s. we're not dropping too fast yet. and that's actually because of that wind. but once the sun goes down here, it's going down in the next 15 to 20 minutes, we'll start to cool pretty quickly. by around 8:00, 9:00, temperatures in the upper 40s for many of you. with the wind out there, will make it feel that much cooler. let's show you what's happening on the satellite and radar picture. that cold front is drifting down to the south. that cold front sweeping on through the area. you can see the clouds associated with that, in through the philadelphia region.

for us, we're starting to clear out. those clear skies will help us to cool. as far as the forecast goes for the next couple of days, take a look. cold overnight tonight as high pressure dominating. the coldest night of the season by far so far. we're going to continue to see those numbers go on down through the night tonight and into the day tomorrow. tomorrow afternoon, we'll see plenty of sunshine once again. that sun will help to warm us up. but it's going to take some time. you may have to wear the coats almost all day long tomorrow or at least the jackets. around noon we start to see the temperatures get up into the upper 50s, to maybe around low 60s late afternoon. if you're out the door at 7:00 tomorrow morning, it's going to be chilly. a warm front sunday will allow the temperatures to move back into the 70s with breezy conditions. 20 to 30 miles per hour on sunday afternoon. but it will be out of the southwest. that is a very warm wind. and some very positive numbers as far as the temperature goes.

we'll stay nice and warm on monday. we're talking about this evening, clear skies, breezy and cold. cooling quickly. 42 to about 55 degrees. this is about the 9:00 hour. so watch out for those winds, too, as we talked about, those winds are going to make it feel that much cooler. through the night tonight, if you're heading down to the game, just know we've got the frost and freeze advisories in effect. montgomery county, howard county, loudoun county, prince william and fauquier. and everybody north and west of that area. the blue, the light blue, that is a frost advisory, which does include the district. it does include alexandria, fairfax, prince george's, arundel, stafford county, culpepper county and around the fredericksburg region. just about everybody under some kind of frost or freeze advisory throughout the evening and into the overnight hours. bring in the pets and plants. it is going to be a cold night. clear skies early tomorrow morning. 28 degrees in some of the

bullying case captured by a tv news crew earlier this week. brunswick high school student preston deener was doing an interview about bullying when three students approached him and one of them hit him on the head. that 15-year-old will be charged as a juvenile with second-degree assault. the frederick county sheriff's office called it an isolated case unrelated to any earlier incidents. in alexandria tonight, a spike in sex assaults targeting women out walking alone. at least three women were

attacked in recent weeks. >> police say the most recent happened last night near van doren street and courtney avenue. richard jordan reports those attacks are growing increasingly ve lent. >> reporter: drivers go past what hours earlier was a crime scene without a clue. >> i think this is unsafe. >> reporter: after dark, police say this business district became the site of a brutal attack. >> it is kind of an isolated area, not a whole lot of lighting. >> reporter: alexandria police say the 20-year-old got off a bus at 11:30 on eisenhower and van doren. a short walk later, up the street to courtney avenue, that's where the victim was caught offguard by a strange man. she says she believed he's hispanic. >> he had displayed the knife and demanded money. when the victim said, i don't have any money to give you, he then grabbed her and pulled her over the guardrail into the bushes where he sexually assaulted her. >> reporter: the attack has some women in the area on edge. >> i'm worried about this.

i didn't expect from this area like this. >> reporter: that concern is growing, because alexandria police are now investigating three attacks on women just within the past month. this one, the most violent, but detectives say they don't think the three are connected because the other two happened near homes run parkway. they say they think that is just too far. the previous two victims managed to get away, but the woman last night saw her attacker run off and leave her with the litter on the side of the road. police warn women to be alert and take precautions. >> definitely a concern for the area, i'm sure. >> reporter: in alexandria, richard jordan, news4. a school bus driver will spend at least five years in prison for ramming her bus into an employee lounge after a fight. it happened in maryland back in december. a judge sentenced theresa douglas today. she crashed her bus into the building because she was in an ongoing dispute with a

co-worker. three people had minor injuries after that crash. douglas will also have to get counseling. a warning to voters in virginia tonight from the state board of elections. the board is tracking down reports of a telemarketing scam. that scam targets senior citizens telling them they can cast their vote in the november election by phone. those claims, of course, are not true. investigators do not know yet who's making the calls, or how many people they've contacted. virginia is expected to play a key role in the battle for the white house. a difficult day in court for the wife of a man who was badly beaten near d.c.'s eastern market. for the first time she faced the two suspects in that vicious attack. a judge ruled that sunny kooty and tommy branch should be held in the beating and robbery of thomas maslin. maslin has lost sight in one eye and feeling in other parts of his body. derek ward has our report. >> reporter: two of the three

defendants charged with the robbery and beating of thomas maslin were in court to determine if they could be held on the charges filed against them. 18-year-old sonny kooty and tommy branch were arrested and charged with robbing thomas maslin in the early hours of august 18th of the he was found unconscious on the steps of a capitol hill home near easton market. he remains hospitalized. in d.c. superior court, the lead detective testified that branch had told a witness and later investigators that he had played a role in the maslin robbery, that he took his credit card and tried to use it at a gas station caught on surveillance video. also in court, thomas maslin's wife and parents. abby said she had written on a blog spot about her anticipation of seeing the defendants in person. saying she wasn't sure how she'd react to being in the same room with them. in the courtroom she stared stowicly at the pair. neither exceeding a height of

about 5'6". afterwards maslin said seeing them was hard and declined public comment. but she had spoken earlier about community efforts aimed at supporting the maslin family. >> it should not take horrible circumstances such as these to inquire that spirit. >> reporter: that event later this month will be about the safety of communities like the one where her husband was attacked. an attack that at first baffled authorities. the case began to turn to the fate of the suspects in an alley here in the 1800 block of 18th street northwest. three men were attacked and robbed on the same night that maslin was attacked and robbed. police say it was then that moore, kooty and branch were caught and questioned, after the robbery on 18th street. still, the link to maslin's attack wasn't made until later. derrick ward, news4. a muslim civil rights group based in washington launched a new campaign today in response to anti-jihad ads that went up this week in several metro stations. those ads are sponsored by the american freedom defense

initiative. it compares muslim extremists to savages. the council on american islamic relations said its counterad sends a positive message. >> this ad starts with this from the koran. show forgiveness, speak for justice and avoid ignorant. we want to reintroduce civility and values to uplift the spirit of americans and to the mind of those who watch the campaign, to speak up. >> the 16-foot banners will go up next week in stations that feature the other ads and stay up for a month. probably no surprise to commuters, the d.c. area has some of the worst traffic in the entire country. adam tuss got an update on some projects aimed to improve the beltway congestion. >> reporter: gas up and go. around here, it's the go that

gets tough. >> i leave the house by 6:45. get on the toll road, get myself ready to spend about, what, $15 a day. it's at least 45 minutes. it's like constant stop-and-go. >> reporter: day after day, hit the gas, step on the brakes, a study by gps companies tom tom ranks d.c. traffic third worst in the country. >> that's not surprising to most washington yans. it's most surprising to our visitors. but it really is world class congestion. >> reporter: if you're driving just 30 minutes, it means you spend an extra 80 hours behind the wheel because of congestion. two full work weeks. time you can't get back. of course, there are some lucky ones, more the exception than the rule. >> i don't have to travel the beltway that much, or some of the major arteries. i probably don't feel the pain as much as a lot of other commuters. >> reporter: one of the main

questions is, are we investing enough in our infrastructure to make a difference when it comes to congestion in our traffic. well, take a look at that. that's the tyson's mclean station on the silver line, one of four new stations in tyson's corner. transportation planners hope that makes a big difference. other transportation improvements that are here and coming, the intercounty connector in maryland, even street cars in the district. >> we think you'll see real progress in the next year or so from all these major road projects coming online. >> reporter: but until then, most of us ride it out, together. in tyson's corner, adam tuss, news4. los angeles is known for its slow traffic. there's one ride through the streets of l.a. that will only reach a top speed of 2 miles an hour. we'll take a look. the government is concerned about a safety issue on a car you may be driving. we'll tell you about that. and we go to doug at nats park.

a safety concern tonight involving the hyundai automobiles. the concern involves the santa fe model from the 2011 year. safety investigators say a fastener could come loose that would allow the steering shaft to come apart. that, of course, could cause a driver to lose control. the national traffic safety administration is investigating 70,000 vehicles. they'll determine whether a recall is necessary. no injuries related to that problem have been reported so far. it's moving day for the space shuttle "endeavour." the shuttle is on its final journey through the streets of los angeles today. it's a 12-mile trip from the

this was a moment you don't see very often, right? a walk-off home run. but a walk-off home run in a game this important, to keep the season alive. and it's done by your highest paid player, jayson werth, $126 million man getting it done. 14th postseason home run. but his first as a member of the nationals. and man, this was big. i tell you, there were a couple of pitchers who actually knew it was coming. they predicted it. >> it was funny, me and drew were watching the at-bat unfold. he turned to me and said, i remember an at-bat just like this a few years ago in philly against me. and i was like, yeah, you know what, you're right. he said, he's going deep right here. credit to drew. it's all him. he called it. i told cliff, i said, hey, that's a striking resemblance of a walk-off he hit a couple of years ago.

because i threw him a 2-2 breaking ball that he fouled off. i thought, he might get another fastball here and i don't think he's going to miss it. i know firsthand. >> by the way, nobody in major league baseball has more postseason home runs than jayson werth, besides albert pujols. you can see the celebration. gets the helmet toss, jumps on home plate. i would love to see that one more time tonight. all right. on the mound for the nationals tonight is a man named gio gonzalez. they traded four top prospects to get this guy, and it has paid dividends. gio gonzalez, a 21-game winner this year, and a legit candidate to win a cy young award. gio got the start in game one with the nationals. that was in st. louis. this was an interesting game. let's take a look how things went down here. because gio, he only allowed one hit in the game, but he tied a career high with seven walks. gio just never felt like

himself. he couldn't really get command of that ball. he said it was a little chilly that night. and so he had trouble gripping the thing. hopefully it's not too chilly for him tonight, because it's colder tonight than it was then. the cardinals lineup can be tough on pitchers. gio's relishing an opportunity for a second chance. >> seven walks, yeah. at the same time you've got five innings, two earned runs, to a team that their starting pitcher went 5 2/3 and gave up one. find a strike zone, some way, some somehow. the way i see it, playing someone else's house, pretty rowdy, you know, it's pretty exciting. you catch yourself in the moment, and take a step back, take a deep breath and try to find it again. >> he's definitely going to be excited. you know, i know gio's out there, going to be out there ready to go. and improve on his last start. just go out and have fun, you

know. gio just being himself out there, have fun and compete. >> that's nationals catcher suzuki. you have to wonder when the guys pulled into the park today, if it feels different. does it feel different? he goes, no. same routine, just like groundhog day, only difference is, a lot more people are watching. they're obviously aware of the magnitude of tonight's potential victory. if they win, they would take on the san francisco giants. another team trying to move into their championship series, the baltimore orioles. they are taking on the bronx bombers, the new york yankees in the bronx. this is game five of the alcs. let's look at the highlights. this is the one the orioles have been waiting for for a long, long time. the winner takes on the detroit tigers in the alcs. c.c. sabathia on the mound, looking at strike three. five strikeouts for six for c.c.

bottom five now. guess who, raul ibanez, the killer, the hero from game three facing jason hamel. and the yankees take a 1-0 lead. right now it is still 1-0 through six innings. can you imagine if the os were able to pull that out and the nats pull it out? two teams in the area? that would be awesome. sunday would be nuts. because the redskins are playing the minnesota vikings. and robert griffin iii will be in that game, barring a setback. but the offense, not going to change that much. shanahan and the boys planning on pulling out all the bag of tricks. >> it's not about being soft, i don't have anything to prove to anybody. the team is letting me know that. everyone's letting me know that. everybody knows i'm a tough guy. i promised i would get up from hits like that, and i kept that promise. i don't have anything to prove. just about getting the yards. if you have to live to play

altogether transformative. i was living in the northeast and i used to walk to the redskins games at rfk every sunday. on the evening of december 31st, 1972, i walked to the game, but i guarantee you my feet never touched the ground on the way home. the skins beat the cowboys that day, stomped them, in a game that took us to our first-ever super bowl. and what i witnessed after that game was something unforgettable. there was an outpouring, a tidal wave, if you will, a celebration and love that brought tears to the eyes. indeed, people were literally crying. but that's not all. a major route for folks going home to maryland and virginia, on that night nobody was going anywhere in a hurry. and nobody was trying to. the street became a parking lot for blocks and blocks from the stadium, all the way up to union station and beyond. people just stopped. they got out of their cars and

they danced. they danced in the street. they went up on people's porches and they danced. they got on top of their cars. everywhere, they danced. and the liquor flowed like niagara falls. people living in the houses all along the street, they went in and came out with bottles of every kind of spirit that you can think of. and here's the best part. people who ordinarily might not even speak to each other, were dancing with each other like they were life-long friends. see, we're talking about four years after the riots. back then suburbites only came into the city when they had to and got out as quickly as they could with the windows rolled up. but not on that night, on that night there was no fear, no re septemb zentment, no black, no white. just burgundy and gold. lord knows i would love to see that one more time in red and white. let's go, nats. >> let's go.
